Item The price-competitiveness of Peruvian gastronomy(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2025-01) Defilippi, EnzoIn theory, Peru could use its recently gained international reputation as a culinary destination as a lever to improve the competitiveness of its tourism sector. However, no single factor can, by itself, make a destination competitive, and Peru has the disadvantage of being located far from the world’s main outbound tourist markets. The aim of this paper is to analyze the price-competitiveness of Peruvian gastronomy relative to its main Latin American competitors. I do so by comparing the cost of the baskets of products and services acquired by gastronomic tourists from 15 countries who have visited Peru with the cost of acquiring the same baskets in five alternative gastronomic destinations: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico. Results show that, overall (considering both local and travel costs), Mexico is the most price competitive destination for gastronomic tourists, followed by Colombia and Peru, with Brazil and Argentina being the fourth and fifth, respectively.Item Interactions in a high immigration context(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2024-02) Aycinena, Diego; Galarza, Francisco; Torres, JavierSudden massive migration influxes have been a new driving force of migration increases in recent decades. These types of migration flows present potential challenges to social and economic integration. In this paper we study socioeconomic integration using controlled laboratory experiments in a context of massive inflow of Venezuelan migrants in Peru, where the share of Venezuelan immigrants in the country’s population increased from almost zero in 2016 to 2.5 percent in 2019. Using adult (non-student) native-born Peruvians and Venezuelan immigrants as subjects, we conducted homogeneous (same nationality) and mixed (different nationality) experimental sessions in Lima, to examine interactions that require cooperation, coordination, trust, and reciprocity to achieve a Pareto efficient outcome. We find no evidence of in-group versus out-group (based on nationality) difference in those measures of pro-social behavior. Within this context, we also find no differentials in normative or empirical expectations in behavior of non-nationals relative to those of nationals, and only small to moderate implicit bias. This lack of differential treatment is suggestive of short-run economic integration between immigrants and natives, in a challenging context of massive influxes of migrants.Item Roads and deforestation: do local institutions matter?(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2023-06) Galarza, Francisco; Kámiche Zegarra, Joanna Noelia; Gómez de Zea, RosarioWe study the role of subnational institutions in forest conservation in a context in which areas near roads are prone to deforestation. We develop an index of institutionalism to examine the extent to which local institutions can contribute to mitigate the road infrastructure’s adverse effect on deforestation. Using a large dataset from Peru, home to the second largest portion of the Amazon rainforest, we find that a higher value of our index of local institutions is significantly correlated with lower deforestation. However, the effect of our institutions index is not sufficiently large to offset the deforesting effect that closeness to roads has, at least not for relatively short distances to road. These results are robust to different specifications of our institutions index and to the inclusión of a large set of control variables.Item Should Lima airport concessionaire be allowed to obtain monopolistic rents by charging foreigners a transfer fee?(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2023-04) Defilippi, EnzoJorge Chavez International Airport (JCIA) is Peru’s main airport, handling 95% of the country’s international traffic. Since its concession in 2001 international transfers have grown 15 times and in 2019 represented 42% of the international outbound traffic. This substantial increase, and the fact that transfer passengers do not pay a fee for the use of the airport’s infrastructure, suggest a misalignment between the incentives faced by concessionaire and the public interest. This misalignment has the potential of reducing the Peru’s air connectivity in the future. The goal of this paper is to assess: (i) if it is convenient to authorize the JCIA’s concessionaire to charge a transfer fee to foreign nationals even though this might generate economic rents, and (ii) if so, whether this fee should be set by the market or by the regulator. Results suggest that it would be desirable to allow the concessionaire to charge a transfer fee even if this results in economic rents, and that JCIA faces competition within the geographic market of international transfer services, which implies that if fee is authorized it should not be set by the regulator.Item Willingness to pay for improved water service: evidence from urban Peru(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2022-11) Galarza, Francisco; Carbajal Navarro, Max Arturo; Aguirre Montoya, JulioWe study the willingness to pay (WTP) for a large set of improvements in water service related to water quality, continuity, and securing access for people with no house piped water during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using data from urban Peru, and the contingent valuation method, we estimate a mean WTP of around PEN 4.3 (USD 1.05), 3.7 and 1.8, respectively, for the aforementioned sets of improvements, with the combined WTP representing a 23% increase in the households’ water service monthly bill. We find that the WTP for all sets of improvements is influenced by the expenditure in bottled water (which acts as a substitute for tap water) and a proxy variable for household assets. The influence of the individual characteristics typically scrutinized by the literature (e.g. sex, age, and education) varies with the type of improvement examined. We find a significant heterogeneity in WTP across providers and calculate the users’ contribution to a water fund that could crowd-in the public investment in water infrastructure. Item Moving down the energy ladder: In-utero temperature and fuel choice in adulthood(Universidad del Pacífico. Item More flights seats, more tourists?: evidence from Perú(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2021-01) Gutierrez Andrade, Jesús; Defilippi, EnzoThe aim of this paper is to determine if the increase in the number and capacity of non-stop flights to and from Peru that occurred between 2004 and 2015 affected the number of visitors arriving from its main tourist markets (United States and Europe). Results using a SARIMA-X model show that a 1% increase in the number of available seats on non-stop flights from and to the United States generated a rise in the number of American tourists by 0.36%. In Europe, where only Spain, the Netherlands and France are connected to Peru via non-stop flights, results are heterogeneous. Evidence shows that the increase had no effect on the number of tourists arriving from these countries, but that a higher availability of seats on flights arriving or departing from Spain did have a positive effect in the number of tourists arriving from Italy, Switzerland, and Germany. These findings suggest that expanding existing routes benefits inbound tourism to Peru even though not necessarily from the countries connected via direct air services.Item Do inclusive education policies improve employment opportunities?: evidence from a field experiment(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2020-12) Monge Agüero, Jorge; Galarza, Francisco; Yamada Fukusaki, GustavoIn labor markets where disadvantaged students are discriminated against, merit-based college scholarships targeting these students could convey two opposing signals to employers. There is a positive signal reflecting the candidate’s cognitive ability (talented in high-school and able to maintain a high GPA in college) as well as her soft skills (overcoming poverty). There is also a possible negative signal as the targeting of the scholarship indicates that the beneficiary comes from a disadvantaged household. We conduct a correspondence study to analyze the labor market impact of an inclusive education program. Beca 18 provides merit-based scholarships to talented poor students admitted to 3-year and 5-year colleges in Peru. We find that the positive signal dominates. Including information of being a scholarship recipient increases the likelihood of getting a callback for a job interview by 20%. However, the effect is much smaller in jobs and careers where the poor are under-represented, suggesting that the negative signal of the scholarship is not zero. Item Would a hypothetical merger between Peru’s two largest newspaper conglomerates have been cleared? A two-sided multi-media analysis(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2018-03) Defilippi, Enzo; Paredes, Carlos E.This study uses an original data set on the Peruvian media sectors to analyze the effect that the association between the two largest newspaper conglomerates would have on the content and advertising markets. This case is particularly relevant given the particularities of Peru’s competition framework and media markets. Using survey data, we conclude that Peruvian newspapers face effective competition from other media sectors in both the content and advertising markets. Our analysis shows that both markets are “unconcentrated” according to the U.S. Horizontal Merger Guidelines and thus, the operation would be cleared. However, if concentration is analyzed taking into account only news-providing media and programs, the market would be categorized as “moderately concentrated” and a full merger between these conglomerates would warrant further scrutiny.Item The environmental costs of Peru's domestic air transport: an appraisal(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2018-02) Defilippi, EnzoThe purpose of this paper is to estimate CO2 emissions from Peru’s domestic air transport. This is basic and relevant information for public policy making that has not been calculated before. The estimation has been performed using destination, frequency and aircraft related data of all domestic flights that departed or landed at Jorge Chavez International Airport, a hub that accounts for over 93% of the country’s domestic air passenger traffic. CO2 emissions were estimated using a methodology proposed by the International Civil Aviation Organization that differentiates fuel usage during each phase of a flight. Results show that, in 2014, Peruvian domestic air transport was responsible for emitting approximately 606,975 tons of CO2. This is equivalent to US$4.35 million or US$59.4 per one-way flight. These results could be used as an input to assess how to internalize the externalities caused by air transport to society and thus, to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the country's environmental policy.Item About the sum of quasiconvex functions(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2017-12) García Ramos, Yboon; Flores-Bazán, Fabian; Hadjisavvas, NicolasWe provide conditions under which the sum of two quasiconvex functions is also a quasiconvex function. Item Alternative setup for estimating reliable frequency values in a ripple tank(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2017-01) Luna, Ana; Núñez del Prado, Miguel; Luján, José; Mantilla García, Luis; Malca, DanielIn this paper, we introduce an innovative, low-cost and easy experimental setup to be used in a traditional ripple tank when a frequency generator is unavailable. This configuration was carried out by undergraduate students. The current project allowed them to experiment and to study the relationship between the wavelength and the oscillation period of a mechanical wave, among other things. Under this setup, students could evaluate the mechanism not only qualitative but also in a quantitative fashion with a high degree of confidence. The results obtained for the propagation speed of the mechanical waves in different media with this alternative design coincided with those acquired using a commercial device designed for this purpose.Item DAZIO: detecting activity zones based on input/output call and SMS activity(Universidad del Pacífico. Centro de Investigación, 2016) Núñez del Prado, Miguel; Luna, Ana; Gauthier, RomainMobile telecoms operators possess an enormous quantity of data, which could be used to reduce the cost of installing new infrastructure, to provide a better QoS or to plan their infrastructure. Thus, they are concerned to model, understand and predict SMS and calls activity levels in their infrastructures. Besides, SMS and call activities analysis can open new business opportunities for geomarketing as well as trade area analysis. In the present effort, we detected activity zones with a difference of only 0.5 km from the reference activity areas extracted from Geo-tweets. We also used Markov chains to represent and predict SMS and call activity levels, achieving a prediction success rate between 80% and 90%.
