Parentesco y negocios: historia de un grupo económico familiar en Uruguay

Abstract

El artículo analiza la trayectoria del grupo económico Strauch en Uruguay. Se adopta un enfoque que combina la dinámica empresarial con la dinámica familiar, incorporando aportes de la historia económica, la sociología económica y antropología. La investigación se fundamenta en diversas fuentes documentales que permitieron reconstruir la estructura familiar, los vínculos empresariales y la trayectoria de ambas dimensiones en el largo plazo. El análisis muestra cómo las alianzas matrimoniales funcionaron como mecanismos de expansión de negocios y acumulación patrimonial y de capital social. También surge que la diversificación empresarial no solo respondió a criterios económicos o al contexto nacional, sino también a las presiones de la estructura familiar. El caso Strauch ilustra la capacidad de resiliencia y adaptación de este tipo de grupos económicos uruguayos frente a cambios institucionales y crisis económicas, así como las estrategias implementadas para enfrentar los desafíos del traspaso generacional. Como caso específico, este trabajo contribuye a la comprensión de las dinámicas particulares de los grupos económicos familiares en Uruguay aportando elementos para un análisis comparativo regional.

This article analyzes the trajectory of the Strauch economic group in Uruguay. It is based on an approach that combines business dynamics with family dynamics, taking contributions from economic history, economic sociology and anthropology. The research is based on various documentary sources that allowed the reconstruction of the family structure, the business links and the trajectory of both dimensions in the long term. The analysis shows how marital alliances functioned as mechanisms of business expansion, patrimonial accumulation and social capital. It also emerges that business diversification not only responded to economic criteria or the national context, but also to the pressures of the family structure. The Strauch case illustrates the resilience and adaptation capacity of this type of Uruguayan economic groups in the face of institutional changes and economic crises, as well as the strategies implemented to face the challenges of generational transfer. As a specific case, this paper contributes to the understanding of the particular dynamics of family economic groups in Uruguay by providing elements for a regional comparative analysis.
