This research aims to identify and measure the barriers that hinder the implementation of international financial reporting standards related to sustainability, specifically IFRS S1 and S2, within the Peruvian banking system. To achieve this objective, the study analyzes structural, institutional, and financial barriers, as well as those associated with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors, drawing on relevant theories and prior research on the subject. The study is framed within an exploratory and descriptive scope and adopts a mixed-methods approach that integrates qualitative analysis with quantitative measurement. The population included the four leading financial institutions in terms of asset participation within the national banking system. A cross-sectional design was employed, and the research was conducted during the second quarter of 2025. The findings indicate that the main barriers are related to the absence of clear regulatory guidelines, limitations in training and specialized knowledge, implementation and consultancy costs. Furthermore, the results highlight the urgency of improving climate risk disclosure and management in banks’ reports. It is concluded that removing these barriers is essential to building a more sustainable, transparent, and resilient financial system. Finally, recommendations and future lines of research are proposed. This study also adds value to both the financial system and the accounting profession by providing an analytical framework that strengthens knowledge and professional capabilities in sustainability and financial reporting. Additionally, it underscores the strategic role of accountants in the transition toward sustainable economic development.en
