Abstract
Financial inclusion, understood as access to and use of formal financial services, enables households to obtain credit, save and reduce transaction costs, and is therefore regarded as a key tool for development and for narrowing socio-economic gaps. This study analyzes how financial inclusion is related to the level and the budget share of expenditure on human capital in Peruvian households in 2019. To approximate this effect, we estimate an instrumental variables model that uses as an instrument the district-level density of ATMs and banking correspondents, and as the main explanatory variable a multidimensional financial inclusion index constructed through principal component analysis. The results indicate that greater inclusion is associated with an increase in total household expenditure and in human capital expenditure, but not necessarily with a greater share of this category.
