Abstract
This study aimed to understand the limitations of digital security mechanisms in the DIRINCRI units examined and their potential implications for the protection of digital evidence and the efficiency of criminal investigations during 2024–2025. A mixed-methods approach with an exploratory and descriptive scope was employed. The qualitative component comprised a documentary review and thirteen semi-structured interviews with eleven police officers and two civilian experts. The transcripts were analyzed using ATLAS.ti. For the quantitative component, a twelve-item questionnaire with a Likert response scale was administered to 83 police officers selected through non-probability convenience sampling based on their availability. The interviews and surveys were conducted in 2025. The results reveal diverse perceptions of digital security conditions. Among respondents, 66.27% agreed or strongly agreed that their computers lacked sufficient protection against unauthorized access. Agreement with the statement concerning the absence of clear rules reached 42.17%, while agreement regarding insufficient guidance or training reached 48.19%. Neutral and dissenting responses preclude claims of unanimous agreement on these shortcomings. The findings describe the participating group and do not establish statistical representativeness of the population or, by themselves, technical deficiencies or causal relationships. The study proposes the gradual implementation of an institutional Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) solution, coordinated with procedures for access control, incident response, traceability, and digital evidence custody. The pilot would operate during approved institutional hours with designated, trained personnel. Expansion and interoperability would depend on technical assessment, authorization, and resource availability.
