Abstract
This paper aims at exploring the role of Chinese Public Development Financial Institutions (PDFIs) in fostering renewable energy transformation in Latin American countries. To describe the development status and current transition trends of the Latin American countries’ energy industry, we conducted a comprehensive review of their energy supply and consumption patterns, along with an analysis of their national energy transition policies and regulations. Furthermore, drawing on the transaction-level data of China’s overseas energy financing, the paper draws in detail the stylized facts on Chinese PDFIs’ energy investment in Latin America. Finally, the paper aims to identify the key constraints and barriers faced by Latin American countries’ renewable energy projects, further examine the role played by Chinese PDFIs in supporting the regional transition goals, and provide policy recommendations to advance a just and inclusive
