El impacto del seguro agrícola catastrófico sobre el bienestar de los beneficiarios

Abstract

El presente estudio indaga en el mundo de los seguros agrícolas y su impacto en los beneficiarios. Específicamente, se centra en el seguro catastrófico agrícola y sus efectos en el bienestar. Para ello, se realiza una breve introducción al riesgo climático, la teoría de la utilidad y los mercados en este sector. Adicionalmente se muestra el seguro catastrófico como instrumento de transferencia de riesgo y el impacto del seguro sobre las decisiones. Con ello, se muestran algunas métricas de ingresos, cobertura, ahorro y bienestar del sector. Finalmente, se concluye que el seguro agrícola catastrófico si aumenta el bienestar de los beneficiarios; no obstante, tiene limitaciones y debe venir acompañado de otras políticas que lo ayuden a complementar.

This study explores the world of agricultural insurance and its impact on beneficiaries. Specifically, it focuses on catastrophic agricultural insurance and its effects on wellbeing. To this end, it provides a brief introduction to climate risk, utility theory, and markets in this sector. It also presents catastrophic insurance as a risk transfer instrument and shows the impact of insurance on decisions. It then presents some metrics on income, coverage, and well-being. Finally, it concludes that catastrophic agricultural insurance does increase the well-being of beneficiaries; however, it has limitations and must be accompanied by other policies that help to complement it.
