Abstract
This research analyzes the effects of mental health on productivity through a review of theoretical and empirical studies developed in the literature, both at the international level and in developing countries. The findings show that mental health influences labor efficiency through absenteeism, presenteeism, and a reduction in the marginal productivity of labor. Empirical evidence indicates that workers with mental health issues face lower wages and reduced job stability, contributing to economic inequalities and losses in aggregate production. In the Peruvian case, the impact of mental health on productivity is unknown. However, according to INEI data, by 2024 nationwide, there will be more than 50,000 mental health care visits, 68% above the levels recorded in 2014. This highlights the growing demand for mental health services in the country. Against this backdrop, the need for labor policies that integrate mental health as a key component of human capital is highlighted. Investing in this area not only improves individual well-being but also generates economic benefits by reducing the costs associated with lower productivity and strengthening the efficiency of the labor market.
